Orange
Cinnamon BunOrange is a spirit cat bound to Broccoli Bunch, summoned through an enchanted Cheshire Cat’s Collar of Rare quality. Her arrival gives Broccoli more than a new magical ability: it creates a small, mobile companion whose presence combines comic independence with concrete usefulness. Orange’s semi-transparent form, feline indifference, and repeated acts of assistance make her one of Broccoli’s most distinctive companions.
Summoning and Appearance
Orange enters the story after Broccoli experiments with the Cheshire Choker while hiking. The collar initially resists her attempts to activate it: supplying mana produces nothing, wearing it seems ineffective, and using it as a bracelet also fails. A more focused attempt finally drains nearly seventy mana points and produces a glittering cloud that twists before being pulled inward like a black hole. A popping sound follows, and a kitten appears in midair.
The summoned creature is not an ordinary cat. Orange is described as a ball of semi-transparent fluff, present and tangible while retaining an otherworldly quality. She can walk through the air and feels soft but not entirely solid when Broccoli picks her up. Her warmth distinguishes her from the cold ghosts Broccoli has touched, while her visibly unamused expression immediately establishes her personality. Broccoli responds with delighted excitement, hugging the kitten and treating the summoning as the best day ever; Orange, by contrast, receives the attention with feline reserve.
Temperament and Recurring Behavior
Orange’s defining trait is the contrast between Broccoli’s exuberance and her controlled, skeptical composure. She sleeps through much of the day, wakes with visible displeasure when handled, grooms herself in the sunlight, and reacts to other characters without surrendering her aloofness. When Broccoli introduces her to a group that includes Leonard Chand’nuit and Donat, Orange has been sleeping in Broccoli’s bandoleer. Being taken out wakes her, and she shakes herself to fluff out her fur before looking over the assembled people.
Her relationship with Mister Blue also reveals a playful but watchful side. While Mister Blue theatrically recounts defeating a ferocious monster, exaggerating the story with grand gestures, a lightning crack, and an imitation of the beast fleeing, Orange wakes inside Broccoli’s bandoleer. She floats up behind him and stalks him through the air while he continues performing his victory. The scene turns her apparent passivity into comic potential: Orange may look like a sleepy accessory, but she is alert enough to choose her own target and quietly reverse the balance of attention.
Practical Aid in the Journey
Orange’s value becomes clearest when Broccoli is disoriented. After Broccoli admits that returning will be difficult because she cannot see well, Orange huffs silently, leaves Broccoli’s chest, and walks ahead. Her faint glow illuminates the path, turning a companion who had seemed mainly decorative into a source of navigational help. The light is modest, but in the immediate circumstances it is sufficient, and the understated intervention matches Orange’s character: she solves the problem without ceremony.
Orange also assists Broccoli after physical danger. When Broccoli is injured and struggling to reach and search her pack, Orange comes closer, climbs inside the backpack, and emerges carrying a potion between her teeth. Broccoli drinks it, and the displayed health value is 37 out of 120, giving the rescue a sharply practical context. Orange does not merely remain beside Broccoli during hardship; she recognizes the available remedy and retrieves it when Broccoli is too hurt to do so easily.
Bound Companion and Social Presence
The collar’s stated function is to summon a spirit cat once a day, but the narrative’s important result is Orange’s binding to Broccoli. She is explicitly identified as a spirit cat companion bound to Broccoli, and her recurring placement in the bandoleer, on Broccoli’s chest, or near her bed gives that magical bond an everyday physical form. The relationship is affectionate without being sentimentalized. Broccoli carries, hugs, and celebrates Orange, whereas Orange often answers with flat looks, huffs, grooming, or silent movement.
Orange’s presence also changes how Broccoli is perceived in company. Introducing her as “a spirit cat” makes Broccoli’s unusual magical resources visible to others, while Orange’s behavior supplies a quiet counterpoint to the group’s speech and spectacle. Even when Broccoli and Amaryllis arrive at an inn in Port Royal, Orange maintains her own routine: while Broccoli throws herself onto a bed and Amaryllis handles practical arrangements, Orange hangs in the air above the bed, then walks to the window and grooms a paw in the sunlight. She belongs to Broccoli’s traveling life without becoming subordinate to its drama.
Narrative Function and Significance
Orange functions as an ally, a comic foil, and a recurring embodiment of companionship that does not require constant verbal reassurance. Her summoning follows failed attempts and a substantial mana cost, making her arrival a small magical ordeal before it becomes a joyful reward. Once present, she repeatedly converts her supernatural qualities into ordinary acts of care: lighting a route, observing danger, carrying a potion, and remaining close during travel.
Her independence prevents the bond from becoming a simple ownership arrangement. Broccoli treats Orange with overwhelming enthusiasm, but Orange retains the gestures of a cat rather than a servant: she sleeps when she wants, judges displays with unamused eyes, stalks Mister Blue for her own amusement, and chooses where to settle. That tension gives the companion dynamic its charm. Orange is bound to Broccoli, yet she remains unmistakably herself, and the combination of magical utility, physical vulnerability, and feline self-possession makes her a durable presence in Broccoli Bunch’s adventure.
